The table below outlines the criteria for triathletes who qualify as national level athletes and specifies when they should apply for a TUE if they need one.

  National competition National representation
Criteria Athletes who compete in the Elite (standard distance) or the Professional Elite (long and ultra distance) category at the National Triathlon Championships.

Athletes selected in Triathlon New Zealand's Podium or Development squads.
Note: The TUE should remain in place until the end of the World Championship Grand Final event each year (while you are still taking the medication)

Athletes who are licensed to compete in World Cup or Pro Long Distance events.

When to apply for a TUE If you need to take medication that contains a prohibited substance or method, you must have a TUE in place one (1) week prior to the event start date and it should remain in place for the duration of the event (while you are still taking the medication). If you need to take medication that contains a prohibited substance or method, you should apply for a TUE as soon as you are selected.  The TUE should remain in place until the competition period or the pinnacle event for the current year has ended e.g. the final playoffs (while you are still taking the medication).
Note: if you lose your place in the team due to injury or performance, you still qualify as a National-Level Athlete for this period and must have a TUE in place as you could still be drug tested during this time.
