WADA publishes 2020 Prohibited List

4 Oct 2019

WADA has now published the 2020 Prohibited List. This will come into force on January 1, 2020.

The List is released three months ahead of it taking effect so that athletes and their support people can acquaint themselves with any modifications. Ultimately, athletes are responsible for prohibited substances found in their body and prohibited methods found to have been used.

Points to note:

  • The associated summary of modifications document is the easiest way to check for changes.
  • In all cases athletes must insist that anyone prescribing or administering medications check against the current Prohibited List but also take into account any change which may occur in the new year.
  • The anabolic agent LGD-4033 is now also listed by another commonly used name, ligandrol.
  • Regarding stem cells, non-transformed stem cells used alone (with no growth factors or other hormones added) for healing injuries are not prohibited, as long as they return the function of the affected area to normal and do not enhance it (this reiterates the statement in the Prohibited LIst Q&A).
  • Octodrine (1,5-dimethylhexylamine) was added as as example of specified stiumlants. This substance was recently found in some dietary supplements.
  • The wording of S8 Cannabinoids was updated for greater clarity. All natural and synthetic cannabinoids are prohibited in competition. Cannabidiol (CBD) is not prohibited. However athletes should be aware that some CBD products extracted from cannabis plants may also contain THC that could result in a positive test for a prohibited cannabinoid.
